What is ByoByn®?
ByoByn® is an innovative device for enabling and encouraging householders to separate their compostable kitchen waste from the standard waste stream.
What does ByoByn® do?
ByoByn® is a receptacle for compostable food waste which sits in the kitchen alongside a conventional bin or inside a kitchen cupboard, but, unlike any other product, seals in smells and holds a typical family's food waste for 2 weeks in a clean and easy to manage form.
Why do we want to separate compostable kitchen waste?
Compostable kitchen waste has recently been reported to form over 25% of the domestic waste stream (Welsh Assembly – Environmental Division Feb 2004), so recycling through the composting of this resource can have a dramatic impact on local and regional recycling targets. A derived benefit is that the residual waste is cleaner and easier to sort – if so desired.
At present, the majority of this type of waste goes into landfill sites, taking up valuable space and adding to the landfill charges. It’s also a significant contributor to the greenhouse gas, methane, which pollutes our environment.
A few years ago, landfill collections from Local Authorities took place every week. For most of us it is now once every two weeks. Because of EU Recycling Directives (with heavy fines for none compliance), limited Landfill space, and the doubling of Landfill tax over the coming years, these bi-weekly Landfill collections will soon reduce to become monthly.
As recycling collections become more common, we will need to find ways to separate out our different waste streams and store them until they are collected. ByoByn will prove to be the most convenient, hygienic and cost effect way to separate and manage Organic Kitchen Waste to either compost or kerbside.
How does ByoByn® encourage householders to sort food waste?
Market research shows, sorting food waste is perceived to be the most unpleasant and dirty recycling task. ByoByn® is as easy to use as a normal kitchen bin, but is able to seal in individual deposits. In doing so, the ByoByn® controls the odours and hygiene issues that have a proven link with this food waste (Heedrik, D. et al (2000). Applied and Environmental Technology. Vol 66 p627), allowing such waste to be stored in the kitchen between collections. Emptying is easy, with no cleaning required, and there is no second contact with the food waste.
Why is ByoByn® different to compost bin schemes?
The ByoByn® concept has been proven over the last three years and compliments home compost bin schemes by allowing people to more efficiently manage this waste onto home composts - if they want to. Where ByoByn® makes a difference is for the majority of people that can't compost (don't have a large garden), don't want to, or have given up home composting (due to limited space, smells or/and hygiene issues).
Why is ByoByn® Innovative?
The ByoByn® has approved Patents, its name is trade marked and it has already won a Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) SMART Award for Innovation.
How does ByoByn® reduce contamination of compost?
The key to successful and profitable composting is the quality of the feedstock. The design of ByoByn® discourages inadvertent and deliberate contamination of the waste stream.
How does ByoByn® aid collection?
The high density of food waste combined with vermin-proof containment, means that integration with an existing kerb-side collection scheme is easily achievable, with low operator risk. The unique ByoByn® management system not only allows convenient home composing, but easy integration with pre-existing local collection systems.
How will this waste stream be managed?
This requires an integrated approach between the collection authority, waste management contractor, and disposal authority. The ByoByn® can be adapted to meet local needs and requirements.
Will the collection system be 'locked' into using ByoByn®?
No, there is nothing specific about the use of ByoByn®'s that requires dedicated facilities or equipment.
